Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

E-mail Print PDF
Emotional_IntelligenceModern research indicates that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) accounts for up to 45% of one's job/life success, while one’s IQ is said to account for less than 6%

Researchers and management scholars have also found that individuals with high EQ are better at creating positive outcomes. A decrease in productivity occurs with each claim of harassment, incident of temper flair ups, and/or any inappropriate workplace conduct.

1.0 What’s EQ?

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability of an individual to deal successfully with other people, to manage one’s self, motivate others, understand one’s own feelings and appropriately respond to the everyday environment. It is a set of personal competencies demonstrating one’s ability to recognize his/her behaviors, moods, feelings and impulses, and to manage them appropriately to the situation for productive results.

In essence, EQ is about interpersonal skills; knowing what feels good, what feels bad, and how to get from bad to good. It is about creating a powerfully enabling environment where every individual has a strong sense of belonging and feels that they have the opportunity to unleash their potential through their work.
Have you ever been in a situation whereby even if you are a dedicated, technically proficient team somehow results do not seem to demonstrate this?

It may well be a lack of interpersonal skills, in particular, a lack of empathy by the other. This lack of empathy for the needs and desires of others, or EQ, has been linked to one of the main causes of poor performance in the workplace, even among otherwise highly gifted people. It is now widely accepted that our Outcomes are the result of two factors; Environment and our Response to it i.e Outcome =Environment +Response
We may not be in a position to always change the environment that we are working in but we can almost always certainly change our response towards this environment. In essence to change your organizations outcomes you must focus on people’s response to their responsibilities. This response is largely an emotional vibe that can either be productive or unproductive and which determines the nature of outcomes.
We can facilitate the critical skill sets to enhance and sustain the right emotional responses for the desired outcomes in your teams. Performance is about how individual team members relate with each other in the team.
Let's not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it. ~ Vincent Van Gogh, 1889
